About the Item
These finely cast 19th-century figural candelabras were made from gilded and burnished bronze, each mounted on Belgian black marble bases and signed by Charles Cumberworth. The sculptures are modelled after African villagers. The female figure is wearing a headwrap and loose dress holding aloft a water vase, while the male figure is presented shirtless holding a hat in his hand, an axe at his waist and holding aloft a basket of fruit. The fruit basket and vase is used as a base, where banana tree and blossoms inspired arms stem from, creating 5 candle holders with small gilded elements. In the nineteenth century, bronze was preferable more than other materials due to the casting process and its possibility to achieve both detail and consistency. The candelabra was made by applying patina and heat to achieve the desired finish, this technique is commonly used to let the bronze age naturally as it becomes exposed to the elements.
Charles Cumberworth
Charles Cumberworth was a French sculptor during the first half of the 19th-century. According to Gunnis, Cumberworth appears to have been born in the United States to an English father and French mother then was brought to Paris as an infant, where he studied sculpture under Jean-Jacques Pradier (1792-1852) from about 1829 in the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In Paris, this proved to be a difficult matter, for his parentage was not only the cause for his disqualification as a prize winner of the Prix de Rome in 1836, but also for him being awarded only three minor state commissions. After entering the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1829, he began exhibiting at the Salon and continued to do so until 1848. Charles Cumberowrth most famous sculptures are “L'Amour de soi” at Musée des Beaux-Arts de La Rochelle and “ Lesbie et son moineau ” in Paris at Musée du Louvre.
The Jean-Jacques Pradier, who Cumberworth studied under is also a well-known sculptor and among his best works are the figures of Fame in the spandrels of the Arc de Triomphe as well as decorative figures at the Madeleine in Paris.

Ormolu and Patina Bronez Candelabras
Located in Warsaw, PL
These are a pair of gilded candelabras inspired by the Louis XVI style-a style originating from France. The main shaft of the candelabras are constructed from female statues. Unlike the rest of the gilded parts of the candelabra, the women are made from patinated bronze and seems to be standing on one leg while holding up the candelabras’ arms, representing the intense vitality and brilliant beauty of women. At the feet of two young women holding lamps are soft and flexible waves, exuding strength and health, honoring the beauty of the young woman. By taking a closer look you will see that there are five arms radiating in all directions. In Western culture, the number 5 symbolizes origin, adaptability, adventure, love of freedom and diversity. The lamp base is constructed with a quadrilateral support with Acanthus inspired feet, which are classic motifs and delicately sculpted leaves. The combination of gold and bronze creates the subtle and rich tone to it, giving it true antique touch...
