About the Item

A Pair of Regency Crystal and Gilt Bronze Two-Light Candelabra with Central Crystal Vase, Attributed to John Blades, London, circa 1810. Each features a central urn-shaped crystal stem with fine diamond-cut panels, tapering to a stepped circular base with concentric ringed tiers and a serrated edge. The stem rises from a gilt bronze mount cast with acanthus leaf and berry motifs, from which extend two scrolling candle arms ornamented with applied grape cluster details. Each arm terminates in a crystal candle socket above a scalloped and faceted drip pan hung with swags of graduated octagonal prisms suspending elongated spear-shaped drops. The central crystal vases are surmounted by broad, serrated rims above the gilt bronze mounts, combining intricate wheel-cut and cross-cut decoration with finely cast and gilded bronze elements in the neoclassical taste. The scrolling gilt bronze arms are designed with symmetrical curves and detailed foliate work, while the drip pans and candle nozzles continue the diamond and spiral cutting patterns present throughout the crystal components. John Blades, an eminent London glass manufacturer active during the Regency period, was noted for producing high-quality lighting and tableware combining elaborately cut crystal with finely finished gilt bronze mounts. The form, arrangement of prisms, and quality of casting in this pair correspond to known examples from his workshop, supplied to grand interiors and fashionable clients in the early 19th century. England, Circa: 1810
