About the Item

Mother-of-pearl candelabra with light screen in form of a sailing boat with painted view of "Spinnerin am Kreuz", attributet to Christoph Mahlknecht. Height: 56 cm. Mother-of-pearl, fire gilt brass mountings, two-armed candelabra, one of two mother-of-pearl sails hand-painted and inscribed “Spinnerin am Kreuz” (a monument in Vienna). The painting is probably by Christoph Mahlknecht (Vienna 1787-1851), a mother-of-pearl candelabra with a similar painting of the „Spinnerin am Kreuz“ signed by him is in the Wien Museum in Vienna. Ships with painted sails were used as centrepieces since the end of the 16th century like the automat by Hans Schlottheim who worked in Augsburg, part of the inventory of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. no. KK874), dated 1585. Viennese decorative arts of the Biedermeier period are characterized by special quality, especially the very popular decorative mother-of-pearl works; they were sold internationally as so-called "Galanteriewaaren" (gallantry products). On the Leipzig trade fair in 1830 this Viennese works of art were highly praised and it is also mentioned a light screen of mother-of-pearl in the form of a ship, which might be the present piece.(1) The most famous makers in Vienna were Karl Schmidt or Jakob Schwarz. The first one got a bronze medal at the first Viennese trade exhibition 1835.(2) This items were also sold by so-called „Galanterie-Waarenhändler“ (gallantry dealers) like Stephan Syre(4) or Nikolaus Rozet (today jeweler Rozet & Fischmeister) in Vienna. Such luxury items out of mother-of-pearl also were in imperial possession, for example in 1845 archduchess Maria Anna of Habsburg (1803-1858) donated a light screen with a painted view of Vienna for an eleemosynary lottery.(3) Significant mother-of-pearl works of the Biedermeier period are in international museums. For instance a decorative mother-of-pearl casket with steel mountings and several gouaches is in The Royal Collection Trust im St. James’s Palace in London (inv. no. RCIN3487). In the casket are amongst others a rich sewing set and painting utensils. In the V & A Museum in London is an elaborately designed toilet mirror whose backside has a painted view of the St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, probably by Balthasar Wigand (inv. no. W.12-1977). A mother-of-pearl clock in form of a building with painted views of Vienna on glass is part of the collection of the MET museum in New York (inv. no. 1993.314 a,b). A further "gallantry“ item is in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (MAK, inv. no. BR 1557), a picture clock with painted view of the church of St. Charles in Vienna. An important pair of Louis XVI style patinated and gilt-bronze four-light candelabra after the model by François Rémond, now in the Wallace collection, London. French, circa 1830. Stamped to one bronze ring ‘RG’. Each candelabra has a central stem in the form of a torch en flambeau with three scrolling acanthus reeded branches terminating in sphinx heads and palm-leaf candleholders. The arms seemingly tied to the stem piece by knotted gilt-bronze cords ending in tassels. The candelabra are issued from patinated bronze ovoid vases with fluted stems and square section porphyry bases. Each vase is mounted with gilt-bronze female heads and foliate swags and encircled by a putti friezes. The handles of each vase are in the form of patinated bronze satyr’s masks.
