About the Item
The Candeia Candle Holder consists of a mouth blown glass shade paired with a machined brass or sand cast aluminium base made by three different craftsmen - a foundryman, a machinist and a metal polisher. Candeia’s design was informed by gentle memories from the designer’s childhood: traditional oil lamps used around his home in the city of Porto.

The Craftsman
Based in Porto, Paulo Martins and Alberto Cunha share a metal smithing workshop where one takes care of fabrication, spinning and machining while the other polishing. They work with materials such as brass, bronze and copper and combines more than half a century of experience in their trade.
The Designer
Portuguese born, Rui Alves comes from a family of skilled craftsmen. His father and grandfather were cabinetmakers and since his childhood he lives surrounded by tools and materials. Rui studied Industrial Design, graduating in 2001. In the same year, he opened his design office based in his hometown to undertake projects ranging from furniture to product design. Always paying attention to details – almost obsessively – he works intensively to explore materials and processes. Rui has a simple and practical design approach to achieve innovative and strong personality products. His work have been recognized and selected to be part in exhibitions around the world.
