Pair of Portuguese Torchères, D. José Period, 18th century
About the Item
Exceptional pair of Portuguese torchères from the D. José period, 18th century. Masterfully carved in richly patinated wood, these impressive pieces embody the elegance and refinement of the Rococo aesthetic that flourished under the reign of D. José I. Each torchère features a beautifully articulated baluster shaft adorned with intricate scrolling motifs, acanthus leaves, and shell elements, rising from a bold tripod base with gracefully curved legs terminating in stylized claw feet. The surfaces display a superb sense of movement and fluidity, characteristic of the finest Portuguese craftsmanship of the period. Both sculptural and functional, these torchères were conceived to elevate grand interiors, adding height, drama, and sophistication. Rare survivors of their time, they represent a significant testament to the opulence and artistic excellence of 18th-century Iberian decorative arts.
