Set of Canapé and Two Bergeres Dom Jose, 18th Century
About the Item
Set of canape and two bergers in walnut. Portugal 18th century.
The furniture of D. José (1750-1777), although it inherits many characteristics of the previous period, D. João V (1706-1750), is perfectly different from this one. It assimilates many foreign characteristics, but it is unmistakable. The shapes are stylized, presenting greater elegance and balance. In the third quarter of the eighteenth century, with D. José, the French influence intensified, competing with the English influence, without ever supplanting it.
It is from this fusion of influences and their hybridity with Portuguese materials and techniques that D. José furniture emerges. Despite identifying and remaining more faithful to the English style, more functional and sober, more in line with our way of being and this being the main influence that our furniture will follow, our chairs usually have a higher and more slender backrest, are made of rosewood and walnut and the English ones in mahogany. These two chairs are loaded with movement, of curves and counter-curves, volutes, asymmetrical shells, stylized vegetal elements made of woodcarving, ornaments and structures typical of Rocaille decoration.
