18th Century Pair of Silver Candlesticks Johann Jacob Bauer Rococo An impressive pair of silver candlesticks, made in the years 1771-1773 by the renowned Augsburg silversmith Johann Jacob Bauer. Provenance: Augsburg Period: 1771-1773 Master: Johann Jacob Bauer These candlesticks represent the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of the Augsburg silversmiths, who were known throughout Europe for their fine craftsmanship in the 18th century. At this time, Augsburg was considered one of the most important centres for the production of high-quality silver and played a leading role in the arts and crafts of the Baroque and Rococo periods. The importance of Augsburg silversmithing Augsburg was famous for its outstanding silversmiths in the 17th and 18th centuries. The city was home to numerous highly skilled masters who worked for both European courts and wealthy citizens. Augsburg silverwork is characterised by the perfect combination of functional design and opulent decoration as well as the strict quality standards that were monitored by the guild. Johann Jacob Bauer was one of the most respected masters of his time. His works are characterised by elegance, proportion and fine surface design. Bauer belonged to a generation of silversmiths who helped shape the stylistic shift from Rococo to early Classicism. This pair of candlesticks stands on curved bases that are ornately decorated and indicate the transition from playful rococo elements to clearer lines. They are an excellent example of the high craftsmanship and style of the Augsburg School and a valuable collector's item. An 18th century masterpiece that represents the glorious tradition of Augsburg silversmithing!
