Candlestick with Lapis Lazuli and Sculpted Figures

About the Item

This extraordinary neoclassical candlestick is a masterwork of decorative art, seamlessly blending precious materials and refined form in an expression of aristocratic taste and timeless elegance. Standing with poised verticality, the candlestick is defined by a tapered central shaft of genuine lapis lazuli, its deep ultramarine hue punctuated by natural pyrite inclusions, creating a shimmering, celestial effect reminiscent of a starlit night sky. The lapis column is encased in finely chased gilt bronze (ormolu), richly coated in 24-carat gold, which both enhances the luminous quality of the stone and provides structural strength. Midway along the shaft, a gilded ring adorned with scrolling foliage adds ornamental detail and divides the composition harmoniously. The upper portion of the candlestick is crowned with an elaborate ensemble of three finely cast female masks, each framed with flowing hair and classical drapery. These allegorical faces, arranged in perfect symmetry around the socket, evoke the aesthetics of ancient Roman sculpture, serving both a decorative and symbolic function—perhaps representing muses, virtues, or goddesses. Above this trio of faces, the candle holder emerges with a flared lip and fluted body, decorated with engraved foliate motifs. Its intricate detailing and proportions suggest that it may have once been part of a grand candelabrum or a matched pair, possibly commissioned for a noble residence or royal court. The base is a broad, circular platform richly ornamented with wreaths, acanthus leaves, and classical borders. This sturdy foundation is not only decorative but symbolic of the balance and order revered in neoclassical design. Historical and Artistic Context: The candlestick clearly reflects the influence of the Neoclassical movement (circa 1770–1830), which emerged in response to the ornate exuberance of the Rococo. It draws inspiration from the archaeological discoveries in Herculaneum and Pompeii, reviving Greco-Roman motifs and integrating them into decorative arts with disciplined geometry and idealized forms.
