About the Item

Exquisite bronze pricket candlesticks, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, are a magnificent testament to the enduring craftsmanship of the period. This rare and complete set of three, a true find for any discerning collector, showcases a design that is both elegant and substantial. Each candlestick is cast in solid bronze, possessing a rich, warm patina that speaks to centuries of history and careful preservation. The surface exhibits a subtle, aged sheen with areas of verdigris and patination that beautifully highlight the contours and age of the pieces. The form is classic and well-proportioned, featuring a broad, tiered circular base that provides a solid foundation. Rising from the base is a turned, baluster-form stem, which leads up to the deep, wide drip pan. The generous proportions of the pan are not merely decorative; they were designed to effectively catch the molten wax, a practical detail that underscores the functional yet beautiful nature of these objects. At the centre of each pan stands the tall, slender pricket spike, tapering to a sharp point, which was used to secure a large, thick candle. The prickets themselves show subtle signs of use and age, including minor surface imperfections and remnants of old wax, adding to their authentic charm. These candlesticks are not merely functional items; they are objects of decorative art, imbued with a sense of grandeur and historical importance. Their design is characteristic of the late Baroque period, with a robust yet refined aesthetic that would have been at home in a country house, chapel, or grand dining hall. The use of bronze suggests they were created for a household of some standing, as this material was both durable and highly valued. Condition: Excellent antique condition, with a superb aged patina commensurate with age and use. Minor surface wear, scratches, and verdigris are present, adding to their character and authenticity. One candlestick has a slight lean to the pricket. Condition Report The condition is excellent for items of this age. The signs of wear and time are not considered flaws but rather desirable features that confirm the authenticity and history of the pieces. They are offered in their original, untouched state, without any modern polishing or restoration that would detract from their character.
