About the Item

This darling pair of cloisonné crane pricket candlesticks would be the perfect addition to any home. In Chinese mythology the symbol of the crane represents longevity, and the depiction of two side by side are meant to project ultimate longevity. The main body of the bird and base are ornamented with cloisonné, a technique of git metal ornamentation dating back to the 15th century, where wide metal wires are fused to a flat metal base to create facets typically in shapes of florals and animals which are then filled with multiple colors of contrasting enamels. This particular example created with a turquoise base, showcases abstracted divine animals, such as dragons and snakes, as well as florals and abstracted Chinese ornamentation in bright yellow, royal blue, crimson, forest green and a delightful light pink. The enamel work on the base is particularly beautiful, showcasing segments which have been filled with two or more colors creating a gorgeous fused color affect. The pricket and candlestick function of the pair come by way of a prunus sprig etched with florals, and topped by a lotus leaf that has been placed within the bird's long beak. The symbol of the lotus when paired with the crane is symbolic of purity, adding to the already present symbolic iconography within the piece. The wings are removable, revealing a place to stash small treasures in the main body of the crane, or perhaps your keys if they so happen to flank a foyer mirror. The pair are tall, standing at 29 inches, yet take up minimal table space, making them a great fit for a home or apartment looking for a pair of functional and elegant sculptures.
