Pair of Candelabra Paris second quarter of the 19th century

About the Item

Pair of partially gilded and burnished bronze candelabra. Stepped base from which departs the turned and chiseled body with leaf and antemium motifs, at the top of which is placed a gilded sphere constituting, the support point for the two burnished bronze sculptures, depicting in the first a winged nymph with old-fashioned hair and dress and scepter in her left hand, in the second Hermes, characterized by his cloak, winged petasus and caduceus, also held by his left hand. Both mythological figures hold a central stump filled with flowers and fruits, resembling a cornucopia, from which branch five arms of chiseled and gilded bronze adorned with elements from the plant world that echo the decorations on the base. Restorations on a bobeche and replacement of some screws. The Restoration period (1815-1830), in the wake of neoclassicism and the subsequent Empire period, continued with the recovery of classical ideas and influences mainly in the decorative arts. In the case of our pair of candelabra, the classical iconographic apparatus resurfaces both in the scrupulous chiseled decoration and in the theme proposed by the mythological figures of Hermes and the nymph. The taste in execution and coloring that alternates between burnishing and gilding is fully part of the Restoration period and its late neoclassical taste. Size: 67 x 24 x 25 cm. base 13.5 x 13.5
