Mirror. Tuscany, second quarter of the 18th century

About the Item

Carved and gilded wooden mirror. The rectangular frame enclosing the mirror is carved with small scroll motifs on the corners with the bottom tapped with a burin. Surrounding the frame is a carved decoration with architectural volutes and foliage embellished with flowers; this decoration finds its zenith in the cymatium, where the side volutes are embellished with lambrequins while in the center is a screaming mask that serves as the base for housing an engraved mirror; this is the heraldic coat of arms of the Antonini family, consisting of three ears of wheat held by a fluttering ribbon, placed under three eight-pointed stars. Gouache gilding maintains contrast between opaque backgrounds and agate-polished raised parts. The mirrors are antique mercury. This mirror was most likely made in the second quarter of the eighteenth century. In fact, while retaining all the character of the Baroque mirrors of the early 1700s, it has lightnesses and freedoms that are already the result of a contagion with the new Baroque taste. The almost calligraphic carving in the corners of the frame, which in the early part of the century is wont to sharply reproduce Jean Berain's motifs, becomes softer and gentler here; even the cascades of scrolls and flowers that make up the sides lack the symmetrical rigidity that characterizes the early works of the century. With respect to the attribution to the Antonini lineage, some documents related to noble families in the territory of Fano, containing the noble shield distinguished by three ears of wheat tied by a ribbon and placed under as many eight-pointed stars, are fundamental. The first, a manuscript titled "Blasoni delle famiglie nobili di Fano raccolti per notizia dei posterieri" drafted by Francesco Bertozzi in 1705 and kept in the Domenico Federici Fund; the second, a group of drawings from 1764 titled "Coats of arms of noble families: Nobili famiglie presenti che residono nella città di Fano" by Onofrio Gramignani and kept in a private collection (Giuseppe Castellani Collection). The Antoninis, a family originally from the Faenza area according to the writings of Francesco Seta (De Santi, 2010), a historian of the 17th century, are attested both in the Marche territory and in the province of Pistoia in Tuscany, in the area of the "Macchia Antonini" and surrounding areas. It should be noted that a very similar mirror is published by Enrico Colle (Colle, 2009) in "Il mobile lucchese."
