Polar Crystal Lantern by Göran Wärff for Kosta Glasbruk

About the Item

This is a pair of Polar crystal lantern in two different sizes by Swedish glass artist Göran Wärff for Kosta Glasbruk. It comes in bright crystal with a form that brings to mind a stalactite-like ice sculpture. The glass mass is transparent and very bright and the light makes, especially in sunlight, all the colors of the rainbow visible. Göran Wärff designed the Polar series in 1974. Both lanterns are signed and marked on the underside of the goods and measures as follows… The bigger one: “Kosta 17514 G. Wärff” H 17 cm / 6.6 in Ø 17.5 cm/ 6.9 in Weighs 4360 g / 9612 Ib The smaller one: “Kosta 67513 Wärff” H 16 cm / 6.3 in Ø 15 cm / 5.9 in Weighs 2688 g / 5926 Ib ____________________ Göran Wärff (1933-2022) started his career at Kosta in the mid 60s. He studied architecture in Braunschwrig 1956-58 and arts and crafts in Ulm 1958-59. Between 1974 and 1985 he lived and worked in Australia and Great Britain and returned to Sweden 1986. Lots of beautiful series, unique objects, public works of art and adornment have come from his hands over the years. Sunflower, Polar, Krinolin, Seaside and so on, is some of his popular series. 1976 he designed decorations for the House of Opera in Sydney. “Ljusfångare” (Light catcher) 1994, Smålands Museum. ____________________ The ovens were lit on Kosta Glasbruk for the first time in 1742 on July 26 and have been lit since then! It’s the oldest manual working glass factory in Sweden.
