About the Item

A very handsome & relatively rare pair of 18th century Georgian cast 'bell metal' campaign candlesticks. Both having exceptionally heavy, solid cast columns terminating to threaded posts that allow them to disassemble for ease of use while in transit in the field. Both exhibit an exceptionally warm & lustrous pinkish hue as a result of the higher ratio of copper used in their composition, making these fine candlesticks far more closely associated with being a form of bronze versus that of brass. And as the name suggests, because of its high quality, bell metal was used primarily in the casting of bells, but for a brief period bell metal was also used in casting candlesticks, and in some instances even cannons. It may be of further interest to note that in comparison to other similarly sized examples, these weigh an impressive 1,521 grams, or 3.35 pounds.
