Sicilian South Italian Pair Maiolica Pottery Twin Handled Candlesticks

About the Item

A stylish pair antique South Italian Sicilian maiolica pottery twin handled candlesticks dating from the 18th century. The handmade earthenware candlesticks stand on a wide bowl-shaped foot with a flat partially glazed base with upright sides. The candlesticks are of tall column form in various shaped sections with a pinched top candle holder. Scrolling looped handles are applied to either side of the column forming a heart shape. The candlesticks are hand painted in tones of red, yellow, turquoise green and black on a white ground with simple linear patterning and a stylized leaf and berry pattern to part of the column. The candlesticks are typically unmarked. Provenance: From a private collection and acquired in the UK Art Market. In good condition with customary glaze fritting and wear associated with age and use.
