Georgian Style English Sterling Silver Two-Light Candelabra or Centrepiece
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A fine pair of vintage Elizabeth II English sterling silver two-light candelabra in the George I style; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. These fine vintage Elizabeth II sterling silver candelabra have a plain circular form, in the George I style. Each impressive two-light candelabrum retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit scrolling arms, which support two rounded waisted capitals with plain circular dished drip pans. These versatile vintage candelabra can be used as candlesticks once the arms (labra) are detached. The knopped stems are surmounted on sunken wells, to tooled decorated circular spreading bases. The filled bases retain the original leatherette covering to the underside. The base of each was made by Richard Comyns of William Comyns & Sons Ltd and the labra were crafted by William Bruford & Son; these items will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system the bases are struck with the date letter 'd' and the labra bear 'e'. Two different maker's crafting alternative components of candelabra is not an uncommon practice due to the manufacturing process. Condition These vintage sterling silver candlesticks...

Elegant Pair of 19th Century Gilt Brass Candelabra by Elkington & Co
Located in Benington, Herts
An elegant pair of gilt brass neoclassical Revival four light candelabra by Elkington and Co. English, circa 1880. The three leaf-cast scrolling branches enclosing a confirming scones above slender string stems with lappet-cast collars on compressed lead and shell-cast lion’s paw tripods and tricorn platforms. Very elegant and slender pair of candelabra in original condition with a good color to the gilt work, inspired by the ancient Roman models. Very unusual being gilt rather than the silver-plate Elkingtons are noted for. Will work in both a contemporary and traditional setting. About Elkington & Co. They one of the most important names in English silver and certainly the most important in silver plate as they invented it. They began life in Birmingham as a company of silversmiths in 1836, and experimented with improving gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 (renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1861) and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success. They held Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI. In 1868, Queen Victoria permitted much of the royal plate...
