1940's American Paint Decorated Grandmother's/Pencil Clock

About the Item

20th c., USA, a paint decorated Grandmother's/Pencil clock with the dial marked "Colonial", circa 1940, Colonial Manufacturing Co., Zeeland, Michigan. Hand painted in Adams style with floral designs and a Colonial scene on the central cartouche. The front door opens to reveal a storage space for umbrellas, walking sticks and the like. This is a whimsical, fun and useful decorative piece. Colonial Manufacturing Company was a clock and furniture manufacturer in Zeeland, Michigan from 1906–1983. The company was founded by John Spyker, who began making grandfather clocks in Zeeland in 1899, and incorporated in 1906. Colonial Manufacturing Company made grandfather clocks, library and living room furniture, and spinet desks Dimensions: 71.5"h x 10.5"w x 7.5"d Condition: Good/fair, some paint loss and wear to the case consistent with age and use. Clock has a battery operated quartz mechanism. Shows well. Ready to place. Provenance: Furniture and Decorative Arts from the Laura Pels Collection, River House, NYC Literature: Laura Pels (1931-2023) was a renowned benefactor for nonprofit theater through the Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater. which funded Playwrights Horizons and Roundabout Theater in Manhattan, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, in addition to providing grants and direct funding to theater arts institutions throughout the world.

An attractive vintage 20th c., crystal table clock signed "Daum - France" on the crystal. The quartz clock mechanism also has a stylized Daum signature located below 12 o'clock. At 10' square, the clock has a strong visual presence. History And Meaning Of Anemones: It was believed that the flower sprang from the blood of the slain Adonis, who was a lover of the goddess Aphrodite. As such, anemones were often seen as a symbol of love and passion. In Victorian England, anemones were given as gifts to express love and anticipation. Founded in 1878, Daum Nancy crystal is still recognized for its manufacturing expertise. It owes its fame to master glassmaker Antonin Daum.
