About the Item
A very fine French 19th Century Louis XVI style ormolu-mounted amaranth, tulipwood, sycamore and parquetry pedestal Régulateur de Parquet Tall Case Clock, Attributed to Alfred Emmanuel Louis Beurdeley (French, 1847-1919) After the model attributed to Jean-Henri Riesener, surmounted by a cloud-form case cast with three putti cherubs suspending garlands, centred by a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, on a spreading socle with ribbon-hung garlands, above the square tapering pedestal headed by a laurel wreath beneath an Apollo mask, above scrolling foliage centred by a flower-filled urn, the sides with lozenge parquetry panels, on four paw-cast feet above a shaped plinth centred by a foliate wreath, on toupie feet. The works by Dufaud, Paris, circa 1885.
This clock is a copy of the celebrated model made circa 1785 and attributed to JJean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), now in the Louvre (cat. C.Dr., No 185) illustrated in Pierre Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Picard, 1999, pp. 116 and 384.
Beurdeley, Alfred Emmanuel Louis (French, 1847-1919): Work at first with his father in Paris and eventually succeeded him. He kept the shop at rue Louis-Le-Grand and had worked at Nos. 20 – 24 rue Dautancourt. The business continued in its traditional style with very few variations, until it was closed in 1895 and the remaining contents of the company were sold at the Galerie Geroges Petit. Beurdeley exhibited at the 1878 Exhibition.
Dufaud is recorded as working at Rue de Saintonge in 1870 (Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, Paris, p. 197).

- Condition:Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. A truly beautiful and very impressive clock in very good condition having recently been refinished. Finely chased ormolu with original gilt. The clock is in working condition however the movement, as with all antique clocks, is sold as is.

Folliated scrolls, flowers, garlands, cornucopias and musical instruments such as a harp (Apollo Reference) The cherubs are underlined by pearls, scrolls of Acanthus Leaves and garlands dawning out in foliages, framed with ropes until the lions feet. The feet rest on a base ornated with fleurons and foliages with buds of flowers ending in four conical feet with acanthus leaves. With André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) and Charles Cressent (1685-1768), Riesener was arguably one of the three greatest French ébénistes of the 18th century.
