Louis XVI Clock Signed E. Khan After Jean-Henri Riesener 230 Cm
About the Item
Spectacular mahogany grandfather clock, decorated with numerous high quality gilded bronze fittings. The dial is surrounded by superb gilded bronze frames representing three cherubs in the middle of the clouds. The pedestal case below the clock face is made of mahogany on a rectangular plan and is richly decorated with gilt bronze mounts. The top of the clock case features gold ribbon brackets on the front and sides. Below, the large body of the clock features a classic face surrounded by sunbeams at the center front, above other scrolling arabesque mounts. Each side of the clock is further decorated with a gilt bronze mount of interlocking flowers within rectangular gilt bronze borders, with further gilt bronze mounts of stylized acanthus leaves running vertically down each corner of the clock. The body of the clock rests on four gilt bronze legs, which rest on a mahogany base mounted in gilt bronze, which is in turn fixed on four tapered gilt bronze legs stylized as pine cones. The clock was made after the model of the 18th-century cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener (French, 1735-1806).
The clock is signed on the back of the bronze application - KHAN.
E. Kahn & Cie. produced the most sought after 18th century French designs in England. Furniture and Tapestry Manufactures, specialists in lacquered furniture. “To Kahn's credit, François Linke enabled one of his most important creations, the large desk, index number 550 (for which he won a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900) » (Sothebys “Collections: European Decorative Arts” 2016 644).
