George I longcase clock by William Holloway, London
Georgian longcase clock in a finely figured mahogany case standing on a stepped base, raised moulding to the plinth, long break arch trunk door with brass escutcheon and reeded, canted corners inlaid with brass to either side with turned capitals. Break arch hood with reeded brass inset pillars supporting the dial.
Impressive arched brass, silvered dial with wheatear engraving to the border, raised silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, finely matted centre with ringed winding holes and signed by the maker to the central cartouche ‘William Holloway, London’. Subsidiary dial to the arch for the days of the week and months supported to either side by a pair of gilded centaurs.
Eight day movement of fine quality, anchor escapement, five ringed and knopped pillars between substantial brass plates striking the hours on a large bell. Original brass covered weights and brass pendulum with lenticular brass bob, C.1720
