Georgian mahogany Longcase clock by John Paine, Brentford
A slim finely figured flame mahogany case with stepped base and raised moulding to the plinth. Long break arch trunk door with brass escutcheon, break arch hood with reeded brass inset pillars supporting the dial.
Brass dial with finely matted centre, raised silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals signed ‘John Paine, Brentford’ to the arch on a silvered boss, original finely cut ‘blued’ steel hands.
Fine quality eight day movement with ringed and knopped pillars striking the hours on a centrally mounted bell, circa 1770.
‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists John Paine as working in London, circa 1768.

Slim oak case standing on a raised plinth with long trunk door and a rich patina and original brass escutcheon. The pull forward hood is flanked by integral pillars with gilded capitals and quarter pillars to the rear. A fine Regency longcase clock in the form of a domestic regulator in an architectural mahogany case with inset panels of satinwood and ebonized mouldings. The case of this clock shows the distinct influence of Thomas Hope, the eminent antiquarian and designer who was inspired by the Greek and Egyptian designs.
The 12in square brass dial has a silvered finish and is engraved with Roman chapters and subsidiary second’s dial. The dial is signed within the lower section 'Barwise, London'.
The eight day duration movement is of the highest quality, with five pillars, dead beat escapement, maintaining power and hour strike on a bell. The pendulum has a wood rod for temperature compensation with beat adjustment and rating nut beneath the brass bob. The clock is complete with the original brass cased weights.
