19th Century Empire French Mantel Clock, circa 1820

$4,967.90

About

Mantel clock in cast bronze, chiseled and gilded with mercury. France, around 1820 40 x 28.5 x 12.5 cm (15.74 x 11.22 x 4.92 in) Kg 6.5 State of conservation: signs of wear on the gilding, non-original charge key. The gilded bronze clock, chiseled in some parts and enriched with chiseled applications, bears in the upper part the figure of a young woman in neoclassical clothes with a feathered hat on her head. She sits on a chair and is intent on playing a mandolin. In front of the figure there is a double sided music Stand supporting a voluminous score, while a little dog leans with two legs on her knees. The rectangular base has, on the front left side, a female bas-relief figure playing the flute. Her hair is gathered at the nape and she is dressed in an antique style: probably representing the allegory of Music. The surrounding surface is chiseled and made rough to accentuate the figure. To her side there is the white enamel dial, with the hours in Roman numerals. This is framed by a double band and surrounded by four decorative palmette elements. The dial has two holes for charging (the charge lasts circa six or seven days) and for the ringing of the hours and of the half hours. Two vegetable-shaped chisel applications adorn the sides, while the whole is supported by a rectangular plinth surrounded by a band decorated with palmettes. This, in turn, rests on four turned feet. Below you can see the pendulum, while the internal mechanism is visible behind, hidden by a chiseled door. For similar specimens see: E. Barbolini Ferrari, edited by, Misurare il Tempo. Orologi del passato in collezioni private, Modena 2001. On p. 176 there is a beautiful clock with "the king of Rome" whose dial is signed Prudhomme a Paris. The figures and the little dog here seem particularly close in style and approach to ours.
