Antique Empire Gold Gilt Patinated Bronze Ormolu Mantel Clock

About the Item

Antique Empire Gold Gilt Patinated Bronze Ormolu Mantel Clock French, c. 1810 Height 48cm, width 31cm, depth 20cm A superb example of early 19th-century French decorative arts, this antique mantel clock exemplifies the grandeur of the Empire period. The clock is surmounted by a finely cast figure of a knight in full armour astride a horse, set above a scallop-shaped gallery. Beneath, the white enamel dial presents refined black Roman numerals and elegant gilt hands, framed by richly detailed ormolu (gilt bronze) ornamentation. Supporting the upper portion is a patinated bronze column enriched with gilded accents. Noteworthy among these is a trident emblem, a reference to Neptune (or Poseidon), the mythological god of the sea, underscoring the piece’s maritime theme. Flanking this central support, gilt bronze lion masks are mounted on either side, with sculpted streams of patinated bronze emerging from their mouths and flowing into a pair of classical tazzas below. A romantic narrative unfolds in the central tableau: a woman is depicted seated in a sleigh-like carriage, while a male figure stands behind her in a dynamic stance, as though pushing the sleigh forward. Her head is turned toward him, her expression soft and guiding, adding a tender, storytelling element to the composition. The clock is anchored by a distinctive half-moon (demi-lune) base, set atop a tiered plinth and raised on four turned feet. The lower section continues the aquatic theme, embellished with additional sea-inspired decorative mounts that unify the overall design. Rich in symbolism and craftsmanship, this extraordinary timepiece is not only a functional object but also a work of art that brings together the sophistication of French Empire style and the timeless allure of mythological storytelling.
