About the Item
A magnificent early ormolu (finely gilded bronze) and Sèvres style porcelain clock by renown maker Achille Brocot. It is mounted with delicately painted Sèvres style porcelain with a pompadour rose pink ground. It is beautifully made in crisp gilded bronze and features cupid as a cherub, seated to the top with torch and quiver of arrows - symbolic of love.
On either side are exquisite painted portraits of Madame de Pompadour and Madame du Barry, celebrated mistresses of Louis XV, set within ormolu-framed porcelain panels. Further classical detailing can be found in the lower panels and the dial, which are adorned with elegant depictions of urns, mythical creatures, and scrolling foliage. The original dial retains its finely cut, blued steel hands. As is typical of this clock style, there is no glass bezel or rear door on the case.
The French movement, signed by Achille Brocot, is of outstanding quality. It has been fully overhauled by our clockmaker, runs for eight days, and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. The original pendulum, stamped with the Achille Brocot mark, is included. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link.
The case is in excellent condition, with the original gilding remaining beautifully clean and bright. There is minor wear in areas where the clock has been handled for winding, and to the rear where less gilding was originally applied. The porcelain is also in excellent condition, with the overglaze gilt well preserved and only slight wear visible on the dial lettering. A few of the turquoise and red ‘jewels’ on the dial are missing, consistent with age and use.
Achille Brocot was a member of the renowned Brocot clockmaking family, the eldest son of Louis Gabriel Brocot. He was treasurer to La Société des Horlogers in Paris and was awarded First Class Medal at the 1855 Paris Exhibition - Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers.
Achille Brocot mark on the movement backplate and bezel.
Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

Achille Brocot
Achille Brocot was a French clockmaker and amateur mathematician. He is known for his discovery of the Stern–Brocot tree, a mathematical structure useful in approximating real numbers by rational numbers, this sort of approximation is an important part of the design of gear ratios for clocks. Several improvements in clock design were attributed to Brocot. He invented the "Brocot Suspension", which enabled time keeping to be regulated by altering the length of the pendulum suspension spring by a key turned in the dial.

Delettrez and Achille Brocot, son of the respected clockmaker Louis-Gabriel Brocot, established the clockmaking company "Brocot et Delettrez" in Paris on 20 October 1851, with premises at 62 Rue Charlot Paris. Jean-Baptiste Delettrez worked alongside Achille Brocot for several years and their clock movements are considered to be the most effective made during the late 19th century. Their specialty was a range of clocks based on the innovations of Brocot père and his other son Antoine, but generally of Achille's greatly advanced original design, some having a unique single-arm double-wheel escapement, some having a temperature-compensated pendulum, some having two dials, one of which showed the time and the other which showed a calendar and often other information such as phases of the moon, times of sunrise & sunset in Paris, etc. The firm was awarded a 1st class prize at the Paris World Exposition of 1857 for a commercial clock...
