Art Deco Clock Seagull and Wave, Irénée Rochard

$2,658.17

About

A rare and superb Art Deco clock 'Seagull and Wave', unsigned but after the the celebrated sculptor Irénée Rochard, and dating from around 1935. It features a huge bronze sea bird swooping and skimming the wave that surrounds the clock mounted in a bronze sphere. The piece is full of life and energy from every angle. The stylised sea bird is beautifully modelled in bronze, the wave is bronzed metal, all with the original finished. The piece is mounted in a black marble base. The dial screen printed in gilt on to the bronze sphere. The French movement is a high quality traditional Pendule de Paris movement with a lever escapement. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been tested by our clockmaker. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send it to you. Condition of the case is excellent, the original finish is in excellent condition and has mellowed with some fading and wear. There are some occasional small marks. The wave has some fine hairlines which do not detract. The rear half of the bronze sphere has a couple of light dents. the marble is also in excellent condition with a few light marks and some nibbles to the edges. Irénée Rochard was born in Villefrance-sur-Saône on 16 January 1906. In 1924 he moved to Paris to study Decorative Arts, with Serge Zelikson and René Dubois amongst others. Upon leaving the École des Beaux Arts he presented his first important work, a panther in ‘grandeur nature’. He was a friend of François Pompon and an admirer of Édouard Marcel Sandoz, and between the wars he frequently met with the circle of Animalier sculptors practising at the time. His work oscillated between marked stylisation and a more naturalist style. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, becoming a member in 1938. He received a medal of honour from the society in 1980 and many other awards during his lifetime. For the most part his oeuvre was Animalier; in paying homage to the animal kingdom, he depicted hundreds of animals. The city councils of Paris and New York purchased a number of his works, but Rochard himself remained in Paris until his death on 29 March 1984. Complete with bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. Dimensions of clock: inches: Height 22", width 22 1/2", depth 10 1/2" centimetres: Height 56 cm, width 57 cm, depth 26.5 cm.
