About the Item

An exceptional rare and important early electric oak finely wood carved mantel clock from MATTHIAS HIPP. The beautiful wood carved case with in the top the coats of arms from a noble family from the north of Italy . Mathias Hipp was one of the first pioneers in developing an exceptional battery driven escapement clock.The German clockmaker Mathias Hipp 1813-1893 was a pioneer inventor and manufacturer of electric clocks in Neufchâtel Switzerland. Hipp's numerous inventions included precision instruments such as an electrical pendulum clock, a marine chronometer and speedometers for locomotives . In 1851 Hipp invented an electromagnetic copy telegraph, a kind of early telefax machine for images.

    A very imposing high quality bronze cast, fire guilded Empire mantel clock, of remarkable size with high quality details. The theme of this amazing decorative object is the philosopher Horatius sitting on the ruins of Rome, including a fallen column and a horses head. He was a very important Roman philosopher. He sits on a square block which is a clock, signed by Robin Aine the elder, clockmaker to the king. The eight day ‘on count wheel’ striking movement with ‘silk thread’ suspension. Robert Robin (1742-1799) was enrolled as a master-watchmaker on 28 November 1767. Already as of 1763, he benefited from many advantages in practising his art as 'Privileged Merchant-Watchmaker of the King following the Court and Councils of His Majesty'. He was appointed watchmaker to the Duke of Chartres at the end of 1778 and obtained one of the four posts as ordinary watchmaker to the King in 1782.
