English Regency 'Atlas' drum mantel clock by Baetens

About the Item

The company F. Baetens of London was a very well known maker of high quality sophisticated clock cases with incredible details. Their clocks were sold to high status titled or royal families. The patinated bronze figure of Atlas carries on his shoulder a guilded drum clock. The figure shows a well proportioned muscular body. The two elements in perfect balance show a striking contrast of materials and form. Both are carried on a beautiful rectangular two-tone gilded and patinated base embellished with an eagle within a laurel wreath, extending the impression of power. The eight-day timepiece fusee driven movement with typical English cylinder escapement is signed F. Baetens, Gerard Street, London. The white enamelled dial with Roman numbers and steel ‘brequet’ hands.
