About
This exceptional arabesque skeleton clock is a stellar example of English clockmaking from the preeminent English firm of Evans of Handsworth. The complex timepiece incorporates both an unusual, oversized dial and a complex 8-day triple plate movement, a characteristic found in only the most important Evans' timepieces. The result is a clock that is both visually stunning and a mechanical triumph. Set upon its velvet-covered wooden plinth beneath its glass dome, this magnificent clock is a work of true distinction.
Skeleton clocks are among the most exceptional and intriguing timepieces ever made, as they were designed to display as much of the working mechanism as possible. Popularized circa 1750 by the French, these time keepers became the favorite of the English in the early 19th century. It was then that all the main centers of British clock production began to make the most exceptional examples known today. The Birmingham firm of Evans of Handsworth was at the forefront of skeleton clockmaking by the mid-19th century, and their timepieces are particularly prized today. Designed with elegance in mind, clocks such as this serve as both fascinating timepieces and exquisite objects d’art,
