About
This exceptional two-train English skeleton clock was crafted by the celebrated clockmakers J. Smith & Sons of Clerkenwell. The beautifully designed floral scroll frame incorporates an ivy motif, which perfectly complements the Gothic-style pierced and engraved oversized dial. The timepiece is powered by an 8-day movement and strikes the hour and half hour on the bell that surmounts the elaborate frame. Set upon a velvet-covered plinth beneath its custom glass dome, this magnificent timepiece is among the finest examples of its kind.
The Clerkenwell Borough of Central London has for almost two centuries been one of the leading centers of clockmaking in England, and J. Smith & Sons is among the region's most important makers. Founded circa 1780, the firm flourished during the late 19th century, achieving success at the International Exhibitions and earning a host of important commissions. Today, Smith & Sons creations are highly sought after for both their appealing design and mechanical ingenuity. Their elaborate skeleton clocks are particularly prized.
A very similar, though less complex clock can be found on page 136 of Derek Roberts’ Skeleton Clocks: Britain, 1800-1914,
circa 1880
Measures: 16 3/4" wide x 9 1/2" deep x 19 1/4" high.
