About the Item

French Directoire period ormolu and patinated bronze mantel clock signed Maniere a Paris. A magnificent antique French Directoire mantel clock in patinated bronze and finest ormolu signed Maniere a Paris for Charles-Guillaume Maniere who was working in the Rue des Merciers from 1789 and moved to Rue Christine in 1806. Set upon heavy cast feet the architectural case rises from the horizontal rectangle of the base with its superbly executed moulding to the vertical rectangle of the clock housing. The beautiful convex white enamel dial with the fine cast brass and well finished hands is signed Maniere a Paris. The dial is surrounded by a very fine ormolu bezel with beading and palmettes . To the spandrel corners are four ormolu rosettes in the form of leaf and dart but with forget-me-nots to the centre. To the side of the clock is a superb ormolu mount of a female head set within an ormolu diamond shape. Mounted on the top of the clock a winged cupid with roses in his hair sits before the altar of everlasting love with a butterfly in his hand and his bow, quiver and flame of love around him. Fine large movement of 8 day duration, bell striking the hours and halves by the countwheel system and the timekeeping regulated by a silk suspended pendulum.
