Gilt Bronze & Marble Greek Revival Mantel Clock w. Goddess Athena Sculpture 1880
About the Item
Fine and meaningful, 19th century, goddess of war theme clock.
Throughout the 19th century, French artisans have made some of the most amazing quality and meaningful antiques using the most expensive materials and techniques available. This finest quality made and relatively small mantle clock has all of that and that is why it resonates a timeless style that you don't find anymore in this day and age. On top of this clock you have the beautiful Athena bust and the front of this clock for the most part depicts the unique and detailed armour of a gladiator. The beautiful, solid marble base (with its minor imperfections) is 'surrounded' with a winner's wreath/laurel symbolising victory. Because all these bronze decorations are very ornate, the designer and maker of this fine clock have chosen a very plain dial face (design wise). With the enameled dial face being pure white and the Roman numerals and dial hands being not too large and black, this plain dial face brings perfect balance to the entire design of this clock. The eight day mechanism runs perfectly and this clock strikes a modest bell sound once on the half hours and on the holes as many times as the hour dial indicates. Thanks to the Roman black numerals on the pure white enameled dial face, telling time is easy from a larger distance as well. Another quality feature is the rounded glass door on the back via which you have access to the bell and pendulum at the back of the antique mechanism. So if you are looking for an impressive, stylish, meaningful and modest size antique clock to grace your mantel piece or desk or side table then this late 1800s French work of time telling art could be perfect for you.
