This exceptional mantel clock was crafted by Jean-Baptiste Baillon III, one of the most renowned and innovative horologists of his era. Baillon served an elite clientele, including the French and Spanish royal families, members of the court, and the most prominent figures of Parisian society. This authentic antique French clock is an exquisite example of 18th-century craftsmanship, featuring finely chiseled and gilded bronze elements. The dial is elegantly designed with outer Arabic numerals and inner Roman numerals, complemented by a pair of intricately pierced gilt brass hands. Flanking the clock is a tall, graceful figurine of a woman, symbolizing knowledge and creativity, holding a book in one hand and a feather quill in the other. Beside her stands a child draped in classical attire, standing on books and holding a paper scroll, evoking themes of learning and enlightenment. The composition is set on a pristine white marble base, adorned with intricate details and supported by four finely crafted spinning feet. This is a unique, authentic antique French table or mantel clock. It is in finely chiseled and gilded bronze. The dial with outer Arabic numerals and inner Roman numerals and a fine pair of pierced gilt brass hands for the hours and minutes. Next to the clock is a tall lady figurine, accompanied by a child. The woman is holding a book in her right hand and a feather pen in her left hand. On the other side, the child draped in the Antique is standing on books and holding a paper. The white marble base rests on four small spinning feet. This clock was made by Jean-Baptiste Baillon III, one of the most skilled and innovative makers of his day. Baillon achieved almost unprecedented success to become “the richest watchmaker in Europe” - F.J. Britten. He was also one of the most important clockmakers of the eighteenth century and undoubtedly the most famous member of a long line of clockmakers. His success was largely due to his ability to organise a vast and thriving private factory in Saint-Germain-en-Laye which was unique in the history of eighteenth century clockmaking. The renowned horologist, Ferdinand Berthoud was among many to be impressed by its scale and quality and in 1753 noted that Baillon’s “house is the finest and richest Clock Shop. "Late 18th Century - Kinable A Paris" Along a winding dirt path, the blind Belisarius carries his young guide. The boy has been bitten by a snake, which remains coiled around his bleeding leg. With his right arm wrapped limply around Belisarius's neck and his eyes closed, the youth balances precariously between life and death. Belisarius's eyes are also closed, but guided by his stick he moves forward with determination and purpose. He rises heroically against the spectacular sunset, a monumental figure creating a powerful outline against the sky. But the flaring sunset also signals a chill night and the uncertainty of the path ahead. Belisarius was a popular Byzantine general of the Roman Empire whose promising career was sabotaged by the jealous Emperor Justinian I. In 1767, a novel by Jean-François Marmontel revived interest in Belisarius. In Marmontel's novel, the emperor has the heroic general blinded, reducing Belisarius to begging. He is eventually rediscovered and aided by former officers and his family.
