About the Item

This highly decorative skeleton timepiece signed Webster, London has a single fusee eight day movement regulated by a brass cylinder pendulum. With a very finely made deadbeat escapement and sixty tooth escape wheel. The silvered roman dial is intersected with a subsidiary seconds dial of unusual design. The plates are very finely pierced in a Gothicized Arabesque pattern of foliate scrollwork mounted on an ebonised base with its original glass dome finished in a brocade cord to protect the edge of the glass. Dating from circa 1830 this clock was made buy Richard Webster of the famed family of clockmakers that can be traced back to William Webster who was apprenticed to Thomas Tompion “The Father of English Clockmaking”. Richard Webster, the second in a series of Richards, who moved the family business from 26 Exchange Alley to 43 Cornhill around 1813. The company traded from 43 Cornhill and later 74 Cornhill. Richard Webster was chronometer maker to the Admiralty and to the East India Company. Under Richard Webster II the business seemingly went from strength to strength, at one point occupying two premises – at 74 Cornhill and at nearby 3 Birchin Lane. The Webster name was so well known by now that the surname alone would suffice when signing clock faces. This clock has been serviced and is ready to ship. A miniature French skeleton clock with silk suspension and eight day movement, dating from the mid 19th century, with original glass dome on an ebonised and brass inlayed base with enamel dial. This clock was made by Victor Athanase Pierret whose distinctive VAP mark in an oval is stamped on the base of this clock. He exhibited a small skeleton alarm at the 1851 Great exhibition at Crystal Palace of which this may well be a version. Victor-Athanase Pierret (1806 - 1893) Victor-Athanse Pierret was born 1806 in Bucy-les-Pierrepont. He began his five year apprenticeship with Rolin at the age of 13. Later he moved to Paris and settled in the Rue des Bons-Enfants no. 21 when he was 24. Pierret created pendulum clocks with and without calender indicator, cases for ship’s chronometers, chronometer escapements with temperature compensation and night light clocks with pendulum. At the London Exhibition of 1851 he presented an alarm clock and a pendulum clock with a globe. In 1853 Pierret applied for a patent for a new date indication device, in 1855 he patented an 8-day power reserve movement. Pierret created his own watchmaking tools...

An 18th century balloon shaped bracket or table clock by John Leroux of Charing Cross, dating from circa 1790. The waisted case surmounted by a brass pineapple finial over a drum housing the movement. The dial is behind a hinged convex glazed cast brass bezel to front and brass carrying handles to sides, over hipped concave-sided section forming the base. The front has an applied mount of a sunburst mask, the rear with keyhole shaped door incorporating fine scroll-pierced sound fret set within the frame of the case, on generous cavetto moulded skirt base incorporating break-arch recess to apron and with ogee bracket feet. The five knopped pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with rounded angles to the rectangular plates and anchor escapement regulated by a long bob pendulum with an effective length of approximately 11.5 inches, the backplate signed J. Leroux, London to centre, the 7 inch circular single sheet silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed Leroux, Charing Cross to centre, with fine pierced steel hands and Arabic five minutes to outer track.
