Trophies of War English Regency Clock by Forrester of Hull
About the Item
A superb, rare English Regency period mantel clock in patinated bronze in the form of the "Trophies of War". Set upon a rectangular base with crested helmet and animal paw feet and an applied mount of crossed quills tied with a ribbon to the front centre. The dial set into a shield with laurel wreath above, spears and banners to the side and helmets below. The left hand helmet decorated with a star encircled by a snake eating its tail while the right hand helmet is decorated with a scorpion. Applied ormolu mounts of the winged bolts of Zeus god of war above and below the dial. Gilt bronze engine turned dial with Roman numerals and blued steel spade hands with leaf and dart bezel and convex glass. Superb English double fusee 8 day bell striking movement with original chains and regulated by a Fine English lever escapement. The backplate signed in script Forrester Hull for Patrick Forrester who is known to have been working in Hull since 1813.
