About the Item
Exceptional French Empire Mantel Clock in Gilt and Patinated Bronze
A rare and visually arresting French Empire mantel clock, masterfully crafted in the form of a sculptural acanthus plant. The movement is playfully and ingeniously enveloped by sweeping, patinated bronze leaves — a highly imaginative design that blurs the line between horology and decorative art. The base, richly fire-gilded, features finely detailed classical motifs and medallions, further emphasizing the refined artistry of the piece.
The movement of the clock is signed on the back plate by the renowned Parisian clockmaker Claude Hémon (1770–1820). Claude Hémon became a Maître Horloger (master clockmaker) in 1770 and had a workshop in the Rue Saint Martin in Paris between 1812 and 1820.
This clock case is undoubtedly the work of a Parisian master bronzier (probably Pierre-Victor Ledure (1783-1870), who often collaborated with the clockmaker Hémon), and only a handful of comparable examples are known. A true collector’s piece and a dramatic focal point for any sophisticated interior, it captures the bold elegance and craftsmanship of the early 19th century Empire period.

In French interior design, Vernis Martin is a type of lustrous lacquer substitute widely used in the 18th century to decorate a wide variety of items from furniture and coaches to such personal articles as fans and snuffboxes. The technique was named after the French brothers Guillaume and Etienne-Simon Martin, who perfected the process, but covers work by other craftsmen as well. Highly praised by Voltaire, it was developed to imitate East Asian lacquerware...
