Very Large Ormolu Marble Regulator Calendar Mantle Clock Barbedienne

About the Item

Very Large Ormolu Marble Regulator Calendar Mantle Clock Barbedienne French, Late 19th Century Height 121cm, width 64cm, depth 28cm Expertly produced in France during the final decades of the 19th century, this magnificent mantel clock exemplifies the opulence and craftsmanship associated with the celebrated bronzier Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892). The design is attributed to Louis-Constant Sévin (1821–1888), Barbedienne’s principal designer for over twenty years, whose creative vision helped establish some of the finest decorative art pieces of the era. Atop the clock stands a commanding figure of Neptune, the Roman deity of the sea, symbolising strength, command, and maritime power. This dynamic sculpture crowns a striking architectural case, crafted from griotte rouge marble - a rare and richly hued stone not often used in timepieces, making this example particularly special. Adorning the case are finely cast ormolu mounts, featuring classical masks, ornate foliate scrolls, and flaming urns, all contributing to the object’s mythological and imperial aesthetic. The clock’s glass-fronted façade houses a remarkable selection of dials. The main time dial is beautifully enamelled with elegant Roman numerals, while a secondary dial displays the day of the week and month. Within this, a moon phase indicator tracks the lunar cycle. Also visible are a centrally placed thermometer and a barometer to the right. All components are finely detailed and unified by a decorative ormolu panel, which frames the instruments and enhances their prominence. The meticulous execution of each dial underscores the extraordinary skill of the artisans involved in its creation. The sides of the case are equally refined, with polished ormolu fittings that contrast beautifully with the deep, mottled surface of the red and black marble. The entire clock is supported by four shaped gilt bronze feet and rests atop a stepped griotte marble plinth. Multiple mounts bear the impressed foundry mark ‘F. Barbedienne. Fondeur’. Combining technical ingenuity with artistic excellence, this exceptional timepiece is a superb representation of 19th-century French design.
