About the Item

A magnificent sprung driven table clock by respected London maker George Etherington. The late 17th century, ebony- veneered table clock with alarm and pull quarter repeat on two bells, signed on the chapter ring Etherington London, and on the backplate Geo Etherington LONDON, circa 1695-1700. The ebony veneered, basket-top case has glazed windows to the side and is surmounted by four pineapple finials and a shaped carrying handle. The front door is embellished by a gilt-brass repousse ornaments, mirroring the basket whilst the top one functions as a sound fret. The case rests on four gilt-brass bun feet. The 7-inch dial is of classic design for a late 17th century table clock, with winged- cherub spandrels around a silvered chapter ring, and a false pendulum aperture and a date aperture in the matted centre. The time is indicated by an elegant pair of pierced, blued hands and behind the hands is a silvered alarm disc, visible to set the alarm. The brass, eight-day movement has a going train and a quarter pull-repeat train, as well as an alarm. The going train driven by a spring in a spring barrel via a gut fusee has verge escapement, the verge directly attached to the pendulum with knife edge suspension, secured by an elaborate pierced and engraved apron. The repeat is activated by pulling a cord to the left of the clock, whilst the alarm is activated in a similar fashion on the right-hand side. The backplate is elaborately engraved around the signature cartouche. The movement is secured by two blued steel bracket of typical shape for Etherington. Henri Jacot Carriage Clock with Strike Repeat Function

This superb gorge cased carriage clock is beautifully gilded, with a crisp white enamel dial and a roman chapter ring and outer arabic minutes. The eight day two train movement is regulated by a slivered English lever platform escapement, striking on a blued steel gong, with hour repeat button. The case is numbered 10135 throughout, this coupled with the maker’s mark showing the dates of awards on the front plate, means we can date the clock to between 1878 and 1889. The front and back plates are both marked with Jacot stamps. The front with the medal stamp listing the exposition awards Jacot had won. Bronzes in 1855 and 1862, and silver medals in 1867 and 1878. This stamp did not change until 1889 when Jacot junior won the companies first gold medal. The back plate shows the parrot trademark stamp with the initials HJ which came into use in 1878. The back of the dial is also signed by the enameller and numbered with the serial number. This is a very thoroughly marked and numbered clock in excellent condition. Henri Jacot...

A superb Charles II month duration floral marquetry longcase clock by the well-known maker John Wise, c. 1680-85. Measure: 10". The case is of the highest quality and decorated throughout in very attractive floral marquetry depicting spring flowers and birds showing a high level of sophistication with a glazed circular lenticle to the door. Similarly, the rising hood is decorated with blind frets around the top and surmounted by a shallow caddy decorated by five gilt wooden ball finials. It is flanked by prominent gilt brass-capped solid barley twist columns, with blind fretted panels to the sides. The month-going nicely finned and knopped five pillar movement has reversed going and striking trains, the striking train (on the right) being regulated by a small outside countwheel. The going train has anchor escapement and a seconds pendulum. The movement is fronted by a 10-inch brass dial with an unusual narrow silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and date aperture. It has elaborate cherub-head spandrels in the corners and is signed along the bottom John Wise Londini Fecit. The middle is finely matted, whilst the time is indicated by a fine pair of blued-steel hands, the hour hand richly pierced.
