17th Century Obelisk-Shaped Table Clock

About the Item

17th Century obelisk-shaped table clock Italian, 17th Century Height 28cm, width 9cm, depth 7cm A stunning piece from the 17th century, this table clock is a precious element of horological artistry and mechanical innovation. Encased in gilt and glass, the delicate clock is shaped akin to an obelisk, an intriguing symbol that lends a striking visual appeal. The foundation of the timepiece is a gilt brass and glass box which is topped by a glass pyramid that holds the dial elements of the clock within its confines. Unlike most clock designs, the intricate mechanism of this clock is on full display, taking advantage of the glass, being showcased within the lower base, encased in an exquisite frame of gilt foliage and fluted square columns, set upon four turned bun gilt feet. This provides an enchanting display of precision, showcasing not only the craftsmanship but also the technological sophistication of the era. The base houses a rectangular brass mechanism, equipped with a fusee with gut line and a verge escapement, accompanied by a flat balance spring. Connecting the rectangular base and the glass pyramid is a gilt column. Adorned with chased gilt foliage, the pyramid houses a silvered orb at its core, which indicates the time through a blue steel pointer against a round silvered plaque displaying Roman numerals. Atop the orb rests a gilt bronze flame finial. Above the pyramid sits another gilt flame-shaped finial, fashioned like the one inside the display. Symbolizing enlightenment, life, and rebirth, the flame introduces a spiritual narrative to the timepiece, stirring contemplation of the cyclical nature of time. With the date 'Anno D. 1668' engraved beneath the base, and a Latin inscription attributing the piece as a gift from M. Giovanni Gaigne, Treasurer and Chairman of the council of advisors of the public treasure from Sessa, to the King, the clock holds historical significance. This very fine obelisk-shaped clock, gilded and resplendent, encapsulates a harmonious blend of art, mechanics, symbolism, and innovation from the 17th century. It stands as a significant piece, embodying the epoch's spirit and serving as a remarkable testament to the era's technological progress.
