17th-Century English Lantern Clock by Ignatius Huggeford

About the Item

17th-century English , Lantern Clock, by the historically important London clock maker Ignatius Huggeford... It is worth highlighting that Ignatius Huggeford held the distinction of creating the earliest surviving watch designed with a precious stone for a bearing. This achievement further attests to his pioneering spirit during the 17th century. His signature lies in the lower edge of the chapter ring, where the name of the clock maker, 'Ingn. Huggeford,' proudly stands. Notably, this distinguished clock maker was associated with the illustrious 'nella galleria del gran Duca di Toscaca', serving none other than Grand Duke Cosimo III of Tuscany himself. Such an honour further emphasises the exceptional talent and reputation of Ignatius Huggeford. Encased in brass, with the original iron back-plate and side doors adorned with elegant dolphin frets, the chapter ring, meticulously designed with Roman numerals, quarter-hour markings, and captivating trident markings, transports you to a time long gone. Delicate engravings of tulip designs grace the dial back-plate. Although time has seen the original movement replaced with a double fusee striking Victorian movement, the essence of this remarkable clock remains intact. The solid Anchor Recoil escapement and striking the top bell on the hour .
