French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Garniture Set, By Jacques Gudin

About the Item

A wonderful French 19th century Louis XVI st. Rouge Griotte marble, Ormolu, and patinated Bronze three piece garniture set, by Jacques Gudin, Paris, circa 1820. The elegant set includes a pair of two arm candelabras and a central clock raised on square Ormolu plinths below circular Rouge Griotte pedestals and a fine beaded Ormolu band. A charming patinated Bronze cherub is kneeling while wearing a flowing fabric with his hands raised above his head while supporting the finely detailed clock above. The Ormolu encased clock displays an elegant enameled face displaying Roman numerals and Rocaille designed Ormolu hands within the Ormolu case being flanked by laurel vines, flowing ribbons, and a quiver of arrows crossed with a flaming torch. The clock is signed on its enamel convex dial 'Jacques Gudin', while the back of the clock movement is stamped with 'A G' numbered '2730'. Each wonderful candelabra showcases a charming patinated Bronze cherub standing on one leg while wearing an Ormolu sash around his waist and holding two spiral fluted torches with a berried bottom finial. The fine quality antique originating in France in the late 19th century, exquisite Parisian work, exceptionally executed in opulent, elegant, and sophisticated King Louis XVI style, timeless neoclassical taste, comprising: classical architectural case mantel clock, having pointed bronze doré finial, flanked by scrolled foliates and lyre motifs, fancy enamel dial with Arabic numerals, inscribed F. Lapointe, Paris, eight-day time-and-strike movement signed Samuel Marti 1900 (Paris, 1870-1890), original Apollo mask sun-burst pendulum hanging below clock drum, flanked by matched pair of two arm candlestick garnitures, each with matching scrolled foliates and lyre finial, tapering column support with two candle nozzles, rising on stepped molded base, terminating in patinated brass disc feet. Markings: Pendulum stamped "R" "1721" ormolu on clock & garnitures stamped "1321"; possibly attributed to R. Freres / Raingo Freres. Dial signed by French enameller "F. Lapointe, Paris" Movement stamped by the firm of well-known French clockmaker Samuel Marti et Cie, Paris, second half of 19th century.
