About the Item

French Industrial Steam Hammer Clock. Browned bronze case with gilt trimmings representing an Industrial Steam Hammerwith a piston cylinder on top and a lever leading over to a platform on the left side, below between the legs of the case there are a silvered anvil and a hammer moving up and down forming the visible portion of the complex pendulum. The clock rests on a black marble base with the inscription “Le maitre de forges” traslation: “The forge master”. Silvered dial with gilted Roman numerals applied. Round French brass movement with steel pin pallet escapement and strikes on a steel bell. Three marks on the movement: - n.439 - “Médaille d'or - GLT B.te SGDG Paris” - "Japy Freres" Period 3rd French Republic, circa 1880. Dimensions: cm 45 (height); 30 (width); 15 (depth). Note: The first steam hammer was invented by James Naysmyth who was a contemporary of Guilmet. Guilmet’s fascination with all things industrial as well as horological prompted him to make a clock modelled on Naysmith’s hammer. It is interesting to note that Guilmet was also a prolific inventor who took out many patents and it was he who in 1868, first placed a driving chain on a bicycle, such that it would drive the rear wheel in the manner that we are still familiar with today. Here there is a very collectible example of one of these relatively rare and interesting pieces by Guilmet.
