About the Item
French Industrial Steam Hammer Clock.
Browned bronze case with gilt trimmings representing an Industrial Steam Hammerwith a piston cylinder on top and a lever leading over to a platform on the left side, below between the legs of the case there are a silvered anvil and a hammer moving up and down forming the visible portion of the complex pendulum. The clock rests on a black marble base with the inscription “Le maitre de forges” traslation: “The forge master”.
Silvered dial with gilted Roman numerals applied.
Round French brass movement with steel pin pallet escapement and strikes on a steel bell.
Three marks on the movement:

- "Japy Freres"
Period 3rd French Republic, circa 1880.
Dimensions: cm 45 (height); 30 (width); 15 (depth).
Note:
The first steam hammer was invented by James Naysmyth who was a contemporary of Guilmet. Guilmet’s fascination with all things industrial as well as horological prompted him to make a clock modelled on Naysmith’s hammer. It is interesting to note that Guilmet was also a prolific inventor who took out many patents and it was he who in 1868, first placed a driving chain on a bicycle, such that it would drive the rear wheel in the manner that we are still familiar with today. Here there is a very collectible example of one of these relatively rare and interesting pieces by Guilmet.

A very fine precision table regulator with a spectacular variant of an electric winding system.
Massive facetted gilt brass base, two massive gilt brass colums, in between vertical iron rod with spool, magnets, two contact wheels and governor for electrical winding. The clock stands on an ebonized wooden base.
Silvered chapter ring dial, applied blue arabic numerals, blued Breguet hands.
Movement: massive full plate movement, gilt, decorated, chatoned, precision lever escapement, ruby endstones in ground and bevelled steel settings, precisione rod pendulum.

Rara pendola da viaggio detta “marescialla” con suoneria di ore e quarti, ripetizione a richiesta e sveglia.
Cassa: in bronzo dorato con modanatura “gradinata” arricchita da fregi ed incisioni floreali, cimasa rastremata, maniglia pieghevole a forma di serpente che si morde la coda. La cassa poggia su quattro piedini a zampa di leone. Sul fronte, sportello con vetro per accedere ai fori di carica e per impostare l’ora, i minuti e la sveglia. Due cordoncini laterali per azionare la ripetizione e per armare la sveglia. Sul retro sportello per accedere al movimento.
Quadrante “a fascia” circolare in smalto bianco con numeri arabi e fascia tratteggiata in smalto nero. Nella parte centrale decorazione in bronzo dorato con bassorilievo raffigurante la ninfa Clizia (figlia di Oceano) che osserva il sole (allegoria di Apollo, suo amato) appoggiata ad una ancora di nave. Due fori di carica decentrati per il tempo e la suoneria. Lancette in acciaio brunito.
Movimento: in ottone, doppia platina, scappamento a verga, bilanciere monometallico, doppio bariletto, dispositivo di “advance – retard”, suoneria a rastrello su due campanelli. Dispositivo suona – non suona posto sotto il fondo della cassa.
