About the Item

A stunning American large chrome plated timepiece ship’s clock made by Chelsea Clock Company, Boston, USA. Founded in 1897, Chelsea Clock Company is one of the oldest and largest clock manufacturers in the United States. For over a century, Chelsea’s clockmakers have been designing and building some of the world’s most exquisite time machines. The company continues to manufacture and repair clocks at its corporate headquarters in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Chelsea Clocks have been a feature at the US Naval Observatory and clocks similar to this could be found on the walls. The US Naval Observatory serves as the official source of time for the entire United States. The substantially cast and chrome plated circular case with button catch to large hinged glazed bezel is set on an moulded ebonised oak hanging plinth. The silvered and engraved Arabic dial with outer minute track and inner seconds track has black spade hands. The substantially made single going barrel and jewelled movement has a fine inset platform lever escapement. This clock is unusual to be this big and in a chrome case. Many produced were smaller and most of the bigger examples are in early Bakelite cases. The case is in excellent condition with only minor marks and very light surface scratches. There is some faint staining and light wear to the edge of the case by the hinge. This has not gone through to the base brass and is not very obvious or noticeable. The turned oak surround has been well made and likely to have been produced several years ago. The dial and hands are in excellent condition with only minor age related marks. The silvering is clean and bright and the chapters are well defined. The movements of these clocks are always substantially made and produced to very high and fine standards and this particular one is a fine and well looked after example.
