Magnificent example of a grandfather clock, England , last decade of the 19th century, late Victorian period, with influences from the coming Edwardian style. We are dealing with a true work of art, a block of flamed mahogany, completely inlaid with floral motifs in fruit woods. Impressive case but of a proportion that makes the cabinet slender and well-proportioned. In addition to the skillful craftsmanship of the cabinetmaker who made this wooden body that looks like a painting, we must dwell on the mechanism! Functioning, 8 reeds and three weights, it plays every quarter of an hour a part of the melody, at the stroke of the hour and after a minute ( it served as a reminder of the hour) the whole melody. This beautiful wall clock was made by Thwaites and Reed in the late 19th century. The case is mahogany and numbered 118 with a small ivorine plaque - these clocks were made for establishments such as the Inns of Court and the Bank of England in London. The company were also employed to service them. The clock is wound with the original key and has a lovely deep tick tock (no chime). The diameter of the clock face is 30cm.
