Rare O.B. McClintock Wall Bank Clock, c. 1920

About the Item

A rare piece of 20th century Americana that has survived to this day. It harkens back to a time of “Peyton Place” when outdoor bank clocks or clocks atop a lamppost in the town square were commonplace instilling in us a feeling of communal security and good ol’ American values. In 1908, O.B. McClintock opened the O.B. McClintock Co. company to manufacture clocks which he sold to financial institutions all across the United States. According to one newspaper of the period, the Minneapolis Golden Jubilee, “these clocks not only advertise financial institutions in a dignified impressive manner but add to the refinement and culture of the community which they adorn.” The clock presented here is mounted within a dark brown vintage wooden case with hinges allowing the framed clock face to swing upwards thus giving access to the interior. The are four lightbulbs inside the case located in the four corners. They illuminate the clock. The stained-glass clock face is made of milk glass and blue and yellow glass and is in very good condition with only a few minor hairline cracks in the glass. (See photos). The other straight lines visible particularly in the blue sections of the glass are naturally occurring striations in the glass formation and are not cracks as one would assume. The wood case has signs of usage and wear that is consistent with its age. The name of the clock company on the clock face has faded over time but it is still fairly well visible. The motor that runs the clock mechanism was made by SYNCHRON. DIMENSIONS: Width: 30.25” (76.8 cm) Height: 30.5” (77.5 cm) Depth: 5” (12.7 cm) Actual weight: 27 lbs. (12.247 kg.)
