About the Item

Stylish, very rare and top quality workmanship desk set. When it comes to top quality made Arts and Crafts antiques like this then there are only a few Dutch designers / artisans from that era who were capable of creating such perfectly stylized animal sculptures. Unfortunately none of these three great antiques are marked or signed so we will have to do with what we know from books and from our decades of experience. The first names that came to mind here were Cris Agterberg and JC van der Hoef, because they were both capable of stylizing animal sculptures in ways that only truly creative minds can. These great artisans were able to see and portray animals (or flowers etc) in ways that most mortals never could and that is why their work is still so extremely attractive and collected all over the world. In this case, we believe the artisan may have for the first time in his life seen an elephant and that must have left a lasting impression. Especially in the early 1900s when most people would never even have seen an accurate drawing or photo/image of an elephant. Judging from the pose of these bronze elephant sculptures the artisan may have seen his first elephants in a traveling circus, because here they are portrayed as if standing on a ball or small circular plateau. Both for collectors of rare antique bronzes and for elephant lovers in general these antique works of art are marvelous pieces to use and to have on display. The unique style, the patina, the details and also the weight of the top quality materials (the original glass liner is still there too) show us that this can only be the work of a master craftsman. The bottom of the lacquer stamp has never been personalized (there is no monogram or otherwise) so that also helps the value. For us, this antique ticks all the boxes and if you agree then there is only one box left to tick.
