George IV Bachelor Inkstand Made in Sheffield by Thomas & James Settle, 1822
About the Item
In the manner of Paul Storr. A very rare George IV Bachelor Inkstand made in Sheffield in 1822 by Thomas & James Settle.
This exceptionally rare Inkstand is modelled in the bachelor size and is modelled in the manner of Paul Storr's designs. As you will see from the images, the base is rectangular in form and stands on four winged paw feet, decorated with flower heads in roundels. The edge of the base is decorated with gadrooning, with a raying shell in each corner, flanked by acanthus leaves. The bottle cage is decorated in a similar manner to the base with a central division. The reeded, arch shaped, handle rises to an unusual raying shell top. The two square bottles are decorated with crisp diamond cut designs and have gadroon, bead and scroll silver bottle tops, pierced for ink and sand. As previously intimated, this very fine piece is modelled in the style of Paul Storr, the greatest British Silversmith of the Nineteenth century. This piece is in most excellent condition and is fully marked on the base, cages, and both of the bottle mounts.
