French Art Deco Rene Lalique Large Butterfly Glass Cachet 1919

About the Item

An exceptionally rare and very early signed (R Lalique) original grey stained Rene Lalique 'Papillon Gros' cachet, dating from 1919 (Marcilhac ref: 191). Cachets were made so you could have your initials cut into the base and then use it to stamp red wax seals for correspondence (fortunately no initials have been used on this piece). This early example has its original grey staining (a non permanent form of enamelling use by Rene Lalique on his best pieces). Rene Lalique was possibly the most famous of all glass makers -the most collectable pieces by him are those produced during his lifetime (ie pre 1945), most of these are signed, like this piece, R Lalique - visible in the last two pictures.
