Antique Rosewood Folding Stereoscope Viewer - Philadelphia Gallery of Fine Arts

About the Item

This stunning and highly unusual folding stereoscope viewer was crafted out of rosewood and brass in the Victorian style of the late 1800s. The plaque attached to the eyepiece is inscribed, "G. Meyer Gallery of Fine Arts, 1100 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia". This gallery was known for publishing photos of the 1876 International Exposition in Philadelphia, as well as photographs of Philadelphia. Presumably this stereoscope was used in the Philadelphia Art Gallery at 1100 Chestnut Street for viewing stereoscope cards. Upon placing the stereoscope card on the viewing glass you slide the vertical portion back and forth until it comes into focus through the eyepiece. Included with the stereoscope is a detachable magnifying glass called a graphoscope. In good usable condition however there is an old but stable split in the channel where the stereoscope holder slides, however the viewer still functions fine. Rosewood, brass and magnifying glass are in good condition. No stereoscope cards are included... they are really fun to collect! Perfect in your library or cabinet of curiosities space!
