About the Item
Splendid Roman frame from the Grand Tour era, late 18th - early 19th century. Richly inlaid with numerous medallions of hard stone, including lapis lazuli and jaspers, set in gilded copper plates, and adorned with finely chiseled and gilded bronze applications.
This frame model is a must-have of the Florentine and Roman Baroque that represented a real trait d'union between the two cities. As is well known, the working of semi-precious stones constituted excellence in both city manufactories and reached sublime levels in the decoration of tops, cabinets, caskets and even frames. With regard to the latter, the material used was strictly ebony (or ebonized wood), with frames of so-called "box" silhouette embellished with hard stones such as lapis lazuli on the corners, and often combined with yellow or red Egyptian jasper, amethyst, and agate, in compositions whose geometric pattern could be more or less emphasized (e.g., with silver threading), but which generally involved rectangular, fuselage, and lozenge motifs. Another material used for this kind of work was gilded bronze, generally applied in leaf motifs, or even in the shape of cherubs, which went to embellish the counterframe, to scan the space near the corners, as well as to give movement in sinuous lines on the outer edges. A type of object, then, that involved cabinetmakers, stoneworkers and bronzeworkers at the same time.
During the Grand Tour era, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Roman workshops revived the model of the ebony and semi-precious stone frame, which was highly prized by the wealthy foreign tourists who frequented the city. The excellent quality of workmanship, visible both in the quantity and quality of the stones used and in the fine chiseling and type of gilding of the bronzes, confirm their age; in fact, these frames are reproduced again at the end of the 19th century but with an extremely different level of quality.
Very good condition, original gilding, slight wear and minor signs of time.
