At the height of the 20th century, Émile Gilioli was one of the foremost figures of the lyrical abstraction of French sculpture alongside Jean Arp, Constantin Brâncuși and François Stahly.
Born in 1911, Gilioli grew up between France and Italy, his artistic journey beginning at a young age as he apprenticed under a local blacksmith. Following the first world war, Gilioli’s family settled near Nice where he continued his artistic education at the École des Arts Décoratifs. In 1928, he began apprenticing in a sculptor’s workshop where he would work for 2 years until receiving a scholarship to attend the prestigious École des Beaux Arts in Paris.
In 1939, Gilioli was drafted to Grenoble where he would become friends with the painter Henri-Georges Closon who inspired his interest in cubism and abstraction. In 1945, Gilioli unveiled his inaugural solo exhibition at the Galerie Laforge.
Upon returning to Paris, assumed a leadership role at the newly established Abstract School of Paris, alongside Serge Poliakoff and Jean Deyrolle. His art began to metamorphose, delving into questions about light, form, and the balance between presence and absence. His sculptures ceased to be static entities; they evolved into living surfaces, capturing the essence of movement and light with a rare grace.
The sculpture «Astral» encapsulates the quintessence of Gilioli’s sculptural philosophy. This masterpiece transcends its basic form, becoming a conduit for light and appearing suspended in perpetual movement. Thirteen bronze proofs, seven small and six large, exist of this model.
The model in marble is one-of-a-kind.
Today, Gilioli’s works can be found in collections around the world, including the Musée National d’Art Modern and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Tate Gallery in London, and Museum of Modern Art in New York.
